◇Details / Theory
A method for ◇A Priori Analysis. - Definition: Counting the total number of elementary operations (steps) executed by the algorithm as a function of ◇Input Size. (Handout 02, Page 3) - Counting Rules (Examples): (Handout 02, Pages 4-5) - Assignment, Read, Write: Count = 1 per statement. - Declarations: Often Count = 0 (no execution time). - Conditional (if-else): Count = cost(condition) + max(cost(if-block), cost(else-block)). For worst-case, take the more expensive branch. - Loops (for, while): Count = Sum over iterations of (cost(loop condition check) + cost(loop body) + cost(loop update)). Requires careful summation. - Example (Simple For Loop): for i = 1 to n: body -> Cost is roughly n * cost(body). - Example (Nested Loops): for i = 1 to n: for j = 1 to n: body -> Cost is roughly n * n * cost(body). - Function Calls: Count = Cost of setting up the call + Cost of executing the function body. - Result: Provides an exact polynomial/function representing the total steps, e.g., f(n) = 3n^2 + 5n + 2. This is then often simplified using ◇Asymptotic Notation.

◇Common Pitfalls
Forgetting to count loop header comparisons (header executes one more time than the body). Miscounting nested loop iterations when inner bounds depend on the outer variable. Not simplifying the final polynomial using ◇Asymptotic Notation.
◇Summary
TL;DR — Frequency counting totals all elementary operations executed as a function of input size. Rules differ for assignments, loops, conditionals, and function calls. The result is then simplified using asymptotic notation.
