◇Overview

A zero matrix (null matrix) is a matrix in which every entry is 00. Denoted OO or 0\mathbf{0}.

◇Key Concepts

All entries aij=0a_{ij} = 0 Can be any size: m×nm \times n Acts as the additive identity: A+O=AA + O = A A⋅O=OA \cdot O = O and O⋅A=OO \cdot A = O (when dimensions are compatible)

◇Details / Theory

Definition

The m×nm \times n zero matrix is:

Om×n=[00⋯000⋯0⋮⋮⋱⋮00⋯0]O_{m \times n} = \begin{bmatrix} 0 & 0 & \cdots & 0 \\ 0 & 0 & \cdots & 0 \\ \vdots & \vdots & \ddots & \vdots \\ 0 & 0 & \cdots & 0 \end{bmatrix}

Properties

For matrices AA of appropriate dimensions:

PropertyExpression
Additive identityA+O=O+A=AA + O = O + A = A
Multiplication by zeroA⋅O=OA \cdot O = O, O⋅A=OO \cdot A = O
Scalar multiple0⋅A=O0 \cdot A = O
Additive inverseA+(−A)=OA + (-A) = O

Important Note

AB=OAB = O does not imply A=OA = O or B=OB = O. Matrix multiplication can produce a zero matrix from two nonzero matrices:

[1000][0010]=[0000]\begin{bmatrix} 1 & 0 \\ 0 & 0 \end{bmatrix} \begin{bmatrix} 0 & 0 \\ 1 & 0 \end{bmatrix} = \begin{bmatrix} 0 & 0 \\ 0 & 0 \end{bmatrix}

◇Common Pitfalls

Assuming AB=OAB = O means A=OA = O or B=OB = O — this is false for matrices. Confusing the zero matrix with the zero scalar — the zero matrix has dimensions.

◇Summary

TL;DR — The zero matrix has all entries equal to 00. It is the additive identity for matrix addition. Unlike real numbers, AB=OAB = O does not imply AA or BB is zero.
