◇Overview

In combinatorics, the Multiplication Rule (Rule of Product) states that if an operation can be broken into a sequence of kk ordered steps where Step 11 has n1n_1 choices, Step 22 has n2n_2 choices, ..., and Step kk has nkn_k choices, the total number of ways to perform the entire operation is n1×n2×⋯×nkn_1 \times n_2 \times \cdots \times n_k.

◇Key Definitions

  • Rule of Product: ∣A1×A2×⋯×Ak∣=n1⋅n2⋯nk|A_1 \times A_2 \times \cdots \times A_k| = n_1 \cdot n_2 \cdots n_k.
  • Sampling With Replacement: Each of the rr steps has nn choices, giving n×n×⋯×n=nrn \times n \times \cdots \times n = n^r ordered tuples.
  • Sampling Without Replacement: Step 1 has nn choices, Step 2 has n−1n-1 choices, ..., Step rr has n−r+1n - r + 1 choices, giving P(n,r)=n(n−1)⋯(n−r+1)P(n, r) = n(n-1)\cdots(n-r+1).

◇Worked Example

Problem: An IPv4 subnet host identifier has 88 bits, each of which can be 0 or 1. How many total 88-bit strings exist, and how many usable host addresses remain after excluding the network address (all 0s) and broadcast address (all 1s)?

Solution:

  • By the Multiplication Rule across 88 bit positions: 28=2562^8 = 256 total addresses.
  • Subtracting the 22 reserved addresses leaves 28−2=2542^8 - 2 = 254 usable host addresses.

Q1

A restaurant menu offers 44 appetizers, 66 main courses, and 33 desserts. If a meal consists of one item from each category, how many distinct meals can be ordered?

Q2

How many 55-letter strings (words) can be formed from the 2626-letter English alphabet if no letter may be repeated?

Q3

How many 44-digit integers (from 10001000 to 99999999) consist entirely of odd digits ({1,3,5,7,9}\{1, 3, 5, 7, 9\}) if repetition of digits is allowed?

Q4

When do we multiply counts (Rule of Product) versus add counts (Rule of Sum)?

Q5

A byte consists of 88 bits. How many bytes begin with 10 and end with 01?
